Ramside Golf Club: one of the top courses in the North East

Prince Bishops Course

Ramside Golf Club opened for play on the 1st April 1996.

It was the course architect's first full course design, and Jonathan Gaunt produced a great layout. All our greens were built to USGA specification, 40 miles of drainage was laid, 15 lakes were dug and 50,000 trees were planted, some whips and some semi-mature. At the same time, our 16 bay covered floodlit driving range opened and this doubled as our clubhouse and changing rooms until the completion of our magnificent Clubhouse which opened in 1999.

It was recognised very early on that we had created a great course, but few expected the maturity that we are now enjoying to happen so fast. Ramside is now amongst the top courses in the North East and, to some, the best.

It won’t be until you stand on the first tee that you'll appreciate what lies ahead but our hole by hole course tour may wet the appetite for your visit to Ramside

The playing tips given on a hole by hole basis are also contained in our golf Course Planners on sale at the golf reception.

The Course is Parkland in nature and features 7 water features over 18 holes, many of the 50,000 trees planted before construction are growing strongly and give the course real maturity.

The Prince Bishops Course measures 6851yards, par 72 for men, 5610, par 74 for ladies.

A dress code is operated on the course and in the Clubhouse.

On course, soft spikes are obligatory (we offer a spike change facility). Tailored shorts with sports socks can be worn - No Cargo shorts with side pockets. Shirts must have collars and should be tucked in on the course.

Spikes and caps are not permitted in the bar.

Currently Visitors to The Ramside do not have to produce a handicap certificate except when playing in any of our Opens. However we do expect our visitors to have Golf Knowledge and to observe Golf Etiquette at all times

  • "A BIT OF A DO"

Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club will open its new ‘Cathedral’ golf course for play in September 2014.

Play the Best - Membership from only £905.00

The 7,200 yard par 72 course, designed by Jonathan Gaunt of Gaunt Golf Design, is the only new championship standard golf course to open in England this year.

Durham Cathedral – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s greatest architectural wonders – sits in clear view throughout the round and was the inspiration for naming the course.

In broad rolling countryside, near historic Durham City, we have created a landmark golf course.

There are nine manmade lakes, rolling high-sided fairways, wispy fescue grass and bunkers resembling green and gold waves rearing up from the earth.

The course begins and ends in mature parkland close to Ramside Hall Hotel. The land was previously a third loop of nine holes which have been completely redesigned into a thrilling start and a finish destined to deliver drama and excitement.

The middle holes are laid out across a high plateau, previously called ‘Hilltop Farm’ - with wide-open skies and 360 views - then drop down into a striking valley with dramatic elevation changes, mature trees, steep banksides and a coursing beck.

The hilltop holes are exposed to the elements and a prevailing South Easterly wind which gives the greens a links-like look and feel. They sit proudly, elevated as if part of the horizon, and are protected by the clever run-offs, swales and false fronts more often found in seaside golf.

The putting surfaces are all large, measuring an average of 700 sq metres each, firm, fast and undulating.

The ‘valley holes’ are peaceful and quiet, tranquil even. Here, two beautiful par-threes interchange with a pair of muscular par-fives, defended by well-placed fairway and greenside bunkers.

The 8th hole returns you to the big skies of the exposed hilltop and the spine of the course. Holes 8,9 and 10 are long par-fours defended by large glistening lakes.

Here, your gaze shifts to Durham’s Cathedral and you experience space and freedom. These holes promise to be a spectacular place to watch sunsets.

Touched by the Masters

The Cathedral course is influenced heavily by location but also by one of the world’s greatest golf courses, Augusta National, home of ‘The Masters’.

Designer Jonathan Gaunt calls the stretch of holes from the 11th to the 14th ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner.’ The downhill par-three 12th bears an uncanny resemblance to its famous counterpart in Georgia but instead of Rae’s Creek, Sherburn Beck stands guard at the front of the green.

The shape and challenge of the hole is inspired by Augusta’s iconic short hole and the same is true of the par-four 13th  and the dramatic par-five 13th at The Masters. Sherburn Beck skirts the entire length of the hole just like Rae’s Creek does in Georgia.

The finishing stretch combines two gentle par-four holes with a fiendishly difficult 452-yard 17th hole. The route to the hole is punctuated by several lakes, fairway bunkers, encroaching trees and a difficult green.

The 18th is a 236-yard par three with a trio of lakes to navigate before you reach the safety of a huge undulating green.

The golf course is now complete and a soft opening planned for July. Nine interchangeable holes will open for play and the remaining nine open in September, allowing the warmer summer months to help new turf, grasses and rough to bed down.

Jonathan Gaunt has now created two exceptional golf courses at County Durham’s leading golf resort. The Prince Bishops course is established as one of the finest golf courses in North East England and is a great test of risk and reward golf.

Our new Cathedral layout is a truly thorough test of golf in a location blessed by views, drama and more than a touch of spirituality. If you come to play it, pray to the golfing Gods that you bring your best game!
